PDP Disowns Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Posters Circulating Online Ahead Of 2027 Elections

In a statement issued over the development, the party said the posters featured Jonathan either alone or alongside other notable Nigerians as running mates, despite his continued membership of the PDP.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan from campaign posters circulating on social media which portray him as a member or candidate of different political parties.

In a statement issued over the development, the party said the posters featured Jonathan either alone or alongside other notable Nigerians as running mates, despite his continued membership of the PDP.

The party through its National Publicity Secretary, Interim National Working Committee, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP said the clarification became necessary amid concerns over possible attempts to associate the former president with multiple political parties in violation of the Electoral Act.

Emphasising Jonathan’s membership status in the PDP, the party stated, “We state categorically that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is a registered member of the Peoples Democratic Party under the capable leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN.”

Explaining that the former president personally participated in the PDP’s recent digital membership registration exercise, the statement added.

“He duly registered personally in his ward during the recently concluded digital membership registration exercise — a fact he personally confirmed to members of the Interim National Working Committee during a meeting with him yesterday.”

Highlighting the legal implications of multiple party registrations under Nigerian electoral laws, the PDP said, “This clarification has become necessary in view of the provisions of the extant Electoral Act, under which double registration is not only prohibited but also punishable.”

Alleging that some individuals could attempt to manipulate party membership records using Jonathan’s details and those of other politicians, the party stated, “We are aware that mischief makers may not only design and circulate fake campaign posters, but may also, in concert with highly placed collaborators, attempt to input the details of President Jonathan and other prominent members of our party and the opposition movement into the databases of different political parties.”

Calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission and the public to disregard any such activity, the PDP added, “We therefore put the public, especially the Independent National Electoral Commission, on notice of this malfeasance and urge them to discountenance any such fraudulent activity.”
