NDC Party Zones 2027 Presidential Ticket To South, Reserves 2031 For North At National Convention

The decision was taken at the party’s national convention, where delegates adopted a motion moved by Afam Victor and seconded by Seyi Sowumi.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday formally zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the South, in a move the party says is aimed at strengthening internal balance and broadening national appeal ahead of the polls.
The decision was taken at the party’s national convention, where delegates adopted a motion moved by Afam Victor and seconded by Seyi Sowumi.
The resolution, which immediately became a defining outcome of the gathering, also stipulated that the party’s 2031 presidential ticket would be reserved for the North, setting out a rotational framework intended to manage regional expectations within the party.
Party officials described the zoning arrangement as a strategic step to consolidate unity at a time of rapid political realignment, particularly following the defection of major political actors into the party’s ranks.
During the same convention, the NDC also ratified all members of its National Executive Committee.
The ratification followed another motion moved by Victor Umeh and was adopted without opposition, signalling what party leaders described as “a renewed consensus-driven structure” ahead of the 2027 elections.
The convention came against the backdrop of significant political developments that have reshaped the opposition landscape.
Earlier reports indicated that former presidential candidates Mr. Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso had officially left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the NDC in what many observers described as a major political realignment.
According to those reports, the two politicians, accompanied by a large number of National Assembly members, arrived at the NDC National Secretariat in Abuja to conclude their entry into the party. Their move followed Obi’s resignation from the ADC, where he cited what he described as “insurmountable challenges within the party’s structure.”
Senator Kwankwaso, who had previously indicated he was engaged in broad consultations following legal concerns around the ADC’s status, later confirmed that both he and Obi reached a mutual agreement to exit the party.
Before their formal reception at the NDC secretariat, the political figures reportedly led a large group of supporters to the Abuja residence of the NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, for a high-level engagement. After the meeting, they proceeded to the party headquarters where they were officially welcomed into the NDC.
With the zoning of the 2027 presidential ticket to the South now sealed, attention has shifted to how the influx of high-profile politicians will shape internal competition, power distribution, and the emerging strategy of the NDC as it positions itself for what is expected to be a fiercely contested election cycle.
